Princess Rinda of Balinore knows of only one way to get her cold father's attention - be an obnoxious, spoiled princess. When she finds out that the king plans to marry her off to a far-flung nobleman, she puts on her best bratty show in front of the entire court. But Rinda's plan backfires, and she soon finds herself married to the most ineligible man ever. Her new husband is monastery raised, poor as dirt, and a traveling minstrel. A very, very bad traveling minstrel.

But Alek isn't what he seems on the surface, and neither is Rinda. She won't take this marriage lying down and schemes to find herself a new husband - a king. But as she and Alek travel together, they learn that not only are appearances deceiving, but goals can change in the blink of an eye, and love can get in the way of the strongest plans....

The Scarecrow King is a romantic retelling of the King Thrushbeard fairy tale.

This was a great retelling of the lesser known fairly tale, King Thrushbeard. Princess Rinda is arrogant and selfish, but she evolves organically within the book. Sometimes characters like her come across as annoying, but the reasons behind her negative behavior are examined and I found I could empathize with her throughout the journey.

The 'minstrel' Aleks, is fun and charming. The two neighboring kingdoms within the story, Balinore and Lioncourt, are distinctive and the author does an excellent job of world building. The plot is full of humorous and sweet moments between the two main characters.

This book is romantic without being explicit which, according to the author's notes, is very different from her other books. However, it is completely appropriate for this fairy tale. I could easily see this book as a Disney animated movie or even a live action movie. It has the classic feel and beauty of an old school Disney film. Myles should definitely write a screenplay for this book and approach Disney.

However, there are a few minor flaws. First, I wish Aleks was more fleshed out. While I understand that it was necessary to the plot for there to be a mystery surrounding Aleks, I really wished Myles had expanded on his motivations, thoughts, and feelings for Rinda.

Second, certain parts of this book seem, at least to me, to be very strongly influenced by Tolkien's The Hobbit and LOTR. If you've read the books or even seen the movies, you'll understand what I mean. It isn't necessarily bad, but I feel the author could have been more creative.

Finally, and it really is a minor point, but the color of the minstrel's eyes change from brown to blue halfway through the story before returning to brown at the end. I only mention this because eye and hair color are important plot points, especially to the princess.

All around, this is a very good book for a light read. I would recommend it.

3.5

This was such a cute story! King Thrushbeard is actually one of my favorite fairy tales, and I don’t often see it around.

Part of a royal family known for their magic, Rinda is a spoiled princess with little magic and plenty attitude. After pushing her father’s anger too far, she finds herself married to a poor traveling minstrel and on the road. Rinda is sure she wants out and away from her new husband, but as the days pass a bond forms between them. However, other forces are at work, and not everything is as they appear.

I’ll admit that the first half, while entertaining, was a little frustrating for me because I didn’t much care for Rinda. Sure, I understood where all her negativity came from, but goodness! What a thorny person. However, after her travels gives her some growth, she becomes quite admirable.

Alek too is such a happy-go-lucky character. His positivity is a nice balance to Rinda’s attitude in the beginning. And he’s such a sweetheart! As their relationship develops, the sweetness between them was quite endearing.

Overall, a fun read. I'd probably read it again.
The Scarecrow King is a beautiful, romantic, sweet fairytale. And in the spirit of the famous fairytales, it’s clean, which I do appreciate when everyone seems to be writing erotic spins on the fairytales lately. It reminded me of various other fairytales and stories, the spoiled princess that Rinda was in the beginning reminded me of the princess in The Frog Prince, even the trek through the cave reminded me of several scenes in The Lord of the Rings. I loved Rinda’s attitude, which did grow and change over the course of the story. And Alek, her new husband, was such a sunny, warm, good-natured trooper no matter how difficult and stubborn and scared Rinda was (though I did wish we could see things from his perspective from time to time, though I don't know if that would have ruined all of his secrets even though the audience knew who he was straight from the beginning). And the adventure was excessive fun! I loved their slowly building romance and truly felt for both Alek and Rinda during the course of the adventure. And I really did love the ending! This is definitely going to remain one of my favorites!
